Wellbeing at Foster's

Wellbeing is a priority for us here at Foster's Primary School. We are aware that a positive mindset and feeling of wellbeing is crucial to learning, achieving and developing relationships. At Foster's we strive to ensure that children feel valued and listened to and understand how important wellbeing is for both children and staff. Our values are at the heart of everything we do.

At our school, we:

  • Allow children opportunities to talk and be listened to
  • Help children understand their emotions better through discussions in PHSE or with other adults, if needed
  • Promote self-esteem and feelings of self-worth
  • Encourage children to speak out and ensure their voices are listened to
  • Encourage children to be confidence and resilient
  • Support children when they need help or advice

Support available for wellbeing

Universal Support

Wellbeing is promoted throughout the school day through dedicated SMSC lessons, assemblies and daily classroom practice. Children are taught strategies to develop emotional awareness, resilience and self-regulation.

All classrooms use the Zones of Regulation to help children understand and manage their emotions. Classes also provide quiet areas where children can reflect, regulate and process feelings when needed. Additional strategies, such as worry boxes and regular check-ins, are used to support children’s wellbeing, alongside access to a dedicated wellbeing space within school.

Additional Support

Some children may benefit from more targeted support. We offer a range of interventions including:

  • Emotional Regulation groups
  • Wellbeing interventions
  • Draw and Talk therapy
  • EBSA (Emotionally Based School Avoidance) support
  • Regular check-ins with trained staff and Wellbeing Ambassadors

These interventions are carefully matched to children’s needs and may include small-group or one-to-one support. Interventions are typically delivered over a 12-week period, with progress monitored through pupil voice, staff observations and wellbeing surveys or diagnostic tools.

Where appropriate, parents and staff may complete wellbeing screening tools to help identify the most suitable support pathway for a child. All intervention decisions are coordinated and monitored by the school SENCO, Miss Smith.

Referrals to Outside Agencies

Occasionally, children may require more specialist support than school can provide. In these cases, and with parental or carer consent, referrals may be made to external agencies such as CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) or through a GP.

Working in Partnership with Families

We value working closely with parents and carers to support children’s wellbeing both in school and at home. A range of trusted resources and support services are available for families seeking additional advice around topics such as anxiety, emotional regulation, friendships, sleep and resilience.

Please see the below document for further, more detailed information surrounding our wellbeing support options.
